A deep-south Alabama artist, Durand Seay escapes from traditions that label artists
by location. His paintings search for a flowing and unpredictable expression, ever
changing, like water in a stream or the fluidity of waves. There is a search for a
connection to the soul.
Time and movement are essential factors to affect the participant. As an architect,
Seay builds these expressions from structures intuitively found in nature. There is a
language with a quantum perspective, past, present, and future all at once. Seay
harnesses a viewer’s subconscious to instill awareness, insight, achievement and the
ascendancy of understanding.
Seay employs symbols such as horses for freedom. Blue roosters for vigilance.
Dancers for human emotions like satisfaction or regret. All of these in some form of
movement in time and space.
When we as viewers respect our acceptance of our own place in the fabric of nature
and our rejection of stability in favour of balance, we begin to understand nature’s
chaos in structures. Seay’s illusionistic field creates a moment of disintegration and formation at once.
